Hey there! My name is Jon.

Welcome to Policy Hawk Studies, where I publish independent analysis and commentary on Canadian defence and security. My primary areas of interest are defence procurement, military capability, and strategy, along with the political and economic choices that shape them.

Canadian security is at a crossroads, and I believe it is only through well-informed public discourse that we can make the decisions that will best secure our future. My goal is to produce content that promotes and improves the quality of that discourse by making complex questions accessible without reducing them to easy answers.

I’m an independent Canadian defence analyst and writer. My work has appeared in Vanguard Defence, the Strategic Analysis Network, the Canadian Maritime Security Network, the Naval Association of Canada and Dominion Review.

Professionally, I work in not-for-profit communications, including on programs supporting and housing unhoused Canadian veterans. My background also spans finance, democratic advocacy and professional experience with political institutions and decision-making.

If you want my take in real time rather than waiting for the next piece, I'm @CDNPolicyHawk on X — that's usually where smaller stories, single-point analysis, and breaking news gets a first reaction before it becomes something longer here.
